Charleston, WV – Following West Virginia’s historic opioid crisis settlement last month, the Kanawha County Commission is committed to using the funds it receives in a responsible and transparent way.

The state is slated to receive nearly $1 billion, with much of those funds going into the West Virginia First Foundation. Per the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), local governments may receive around 24.5% of the settlement. The Kanawha County Commission is set to receive around $7 million.

Kanawha County is committed to finding the best ways to use these funds by seeking professional opinions, looking at local governments across the country, retaining a CPA and holding public meetings to gather input and public comment.

The Kanawha County Commission will provide the public with an ample opportunity to voice their opinions on how this money should be used. Approved uses include prevention, treatment and other strategies relating to substance use.

A proper review process will take place before the County uses any of these funds, and all expenditures will be reported to WV Checkbook.
