The Kanawha County Commission and Shawnee Sports Complex will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for our eight new lighted regulation-size pickleball courts on Tuesday, August 9th at 2pm. The Pickleball courts will be located at the front of the park near our basketball courts. The total cost for this project is $386,000, and the Kanawha County Commission provided ARP funds. BBL Carlton, LLC, will construct the courts.

On these 8 courts, Shawnee will be able to attract our local community, along with regional tournaments that will host 200 athletes for a three-day tournament. If you are unfamiliar with Pickleball, it is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong using a paddle and plastic ball with holes. It is a game appropriate for players of all ages and skill levels. Rules for Pickleball are simple, making it a great introductory sport.

The Kanawha County Commission is excited to bring Pickleball to Shawnee Sports Complex. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, rapidly gaining popularity across multiple age groups. We are proud to add this family friendly sport at Shawnee for everyone to enjoy!

Commissioner Kent Carper stated, “Pickleball is a sport that has gained popularity in our area, and we received requests to add Courts to Shawnee. I am pickled to death that we are able to take this step!”

“We have received multiple requests for pickleball courts here in Kanawha County, and I am excited that these courts will bring more recreational options for people of all ages. This project is just another example of the Kanawha County Commission listening to our citizens and doing what is best for our area,” stated Commissioner Lance Wheeler
