*****MEDIA RELEASE*****
Kanawha County would like to take the opportunity to provide an update on the massive effort of bottled water distribution to County citizens affected by the Chemical spill in the water supply. During this crisis, 11,484,000 bottles of water have been distributed in Kanawha County. This amounts to 261 tractor trailer loads of water with 44,000 bottles on each truck.

County Commissioner Dave Hardy has praised the effort to get water to all areas of the County affected by the undrinkable tap water. Commissioner Hardy noted, “The amount of time dedicated by local Volunteer Fire Departments, community volunteers, Emergency Officials, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, and other County employees, in the worst winter weather in years is indescribably heroic. The time they spent away from family during this difficult crisis is one of the most unselfish efforts I have ever witnessed. I am asking everyone who received water from these volunteers to please thank those involved in distributing water in your community. This volunteerism has been especially critical to those who are homebound.”

“Do Not Use” Lift Process Begins

Customers in lifted zones may start flushing plumbing

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (January 13, 2014) ? An interagency team including the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health, West Virginia American Water and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that extensive testing has produced results showing that levels of MCHM are below one part per million (1 ppm). The U.S. Center for Disease Controls (CDC) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) do not anticipate any health effects from these levels and the Do Not Use has started to be lifted according to designated zones. The first zone, which includes the downtown Charleston and East End areas, has now been lifted.

The ban is being lifted in a strict, methodical manner to help ensure the water system is not overwhelmed by excessive demand, thereby causing more water quality and service issues. Zones have been established based on the flow of water from the treatment plant through the system.

West Virginia American Water, along with the interagency team, are communicating the lift zones through a variety of sources including an interactive webpage where customers can enter their home or business address and see their water service status. We strongly encourage all customers with access to the website to use this tool first. This map is accessible at www.westvirginiaamwater.com. Customers are encouraged to regularly visit the map for updates.

In addition to the website, lift zone information is being provided to all media. To supplement the web-based map, automated phone calls using our company customer database will be launched in coordination with lifted zones.

A temporary local 24/7 hotline has been established at 855-390-4569 for additional clarification. The hotline is for the exclusive purpose of helping customers in border areas gain clarification or for those who do not have internet access. Representatives will not be able to provide any information beyond clarification on lift locations. All other questions should be directed to our Customer Service Center at 1-800-685-8660.

Customers in lifted zones will need to flush their home plumbing systems. West Virginia American Water is providing flushing guidance via its website, media, and call center. Only customers located within the zones that have been lifted should begin flushing. Please do not begin flushing until your zone is lifted, nor flush beyond the necessary 20 minutes and put additional strain on the water system.

Customers might still experience a slight odor, but all test results in the lifted zones are below health risk levels determined by the Center for Disease Control.

West Virginia American Water will be offering residential customers a credit of 1000 gallons, which is more than will what likely be required to flush the average home. The average residential customer uses approximately 3,300 gallons per month.

West Virginia American Water thanks all its customers for their patience and cooperation during this event. The company continues to work with the state to provide both bulk and bottled water to impacted residents.

We remind customers that until their zone is announced, water should not be used for any purpose other than toilet flushing or firefighting. Alternative sources of water should be used for all purposes. Bottled water or water from another, safe source should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, bathing, food and baby formula preparation and all other purposes until further notice.

West Virginia American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water services to approximately 550,000 people. Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company. With headquarters in Voorhees, N.J., the company employs approximately 6,700 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and other related services to an estimated 14 million people in more than 30 states, as well as parts of Canada. More information can be found by visiting www.westvirginiaamwater.com.

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTHGrill Fires on Residential Properties

From 2006 to 2008, an estimated 5,700 grill fires on residential properties occurred annually in the United States. These fires resulted in an estimated average of 10 deaths, 100 injuries, and $37 million in property loss each year. This report addresses the characteristics of grill fires on residential properties reported to the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) between 2006 and 2008.

Grill fires on residential properties are defined as fires where a grill, hibachi, or barbecue is the principal equipment involved in ignition and the property use is residential. Of these fires, 45 percent are residential structure fires, 47 percent are outside fires, and 8 percent are other, unspecified fires.

Cigarette fires are MUCH more likely to start VERY close to potential victims
  • 3 out of 10 sleeping victims of cigarette fires are right next to the fire when it starts compared to 3 out of 100 sleeping victims of all other types of fires
  • Once a fire starts this close to a sleeping person, nothing is quick enough to save you with confidence. There is no substitute for prevention.

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTHPREPAREDNESS FOR PET OWNERS

Emergencies Affect All of Us, Including Our Pets

If you are like millions of animal owners nationwide, your pet is an important member of your household. When planning your family for disaster, don’t overlook the needs of your cherished family pets. The likelihood that you and your animals will survive an emergency such as a fire or flood, tornado or any of the all hazards depends largely on emergency planning done today.

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM); while you make a plan to prepare your families also consider your family pet. Some of the things you can do to prepare for the unexpected, such as assembling an animal emergency supply kit and developing a pet care buddy system, are the same for any emergency. Whether you decide to stay put in an emergency or evacuate to a safer location, you will need to make plans in advance for your pets. Keep in mind that what's best for you is typically what's best for your animals.

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTHPREPAREDNESS FOR GENERAL AUDIENCE

This September: You Can Be the Hero

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). It is a time to prepare yourself and those in your care for emergencies and disasters. If you’ve seen the news recently, you know that emergencies can happen unexpectedly in communities just like yours, to people like you. We’ve seen tornado outbreaks, river floods and flash floods, historic earthquakes, tsunamis, and even water main breaks and power outages in U.S. cities affecting millions of people for days at a time.

Police, fire and rescue may not always be able to reach you quickly in an emergency or disaster. The most important step you can take in helping your local responders is being able to take care of yourself and those in your care; the more people who are prepared, the quicker the community will recover

This September, please prepare and plan in the event you must go for three days without electricity, water service, access to a supermarket, or local services for several days. Click on the link to follow the four steps on how to be prepared.

Know the Tone: Wireless Emergency Alerts Over the past year, many Americans have received important and life-saving announcements from new technology that they may know they had: a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA). Our cell phones can now potentially help save lives and keep us safe. You do not need to register to receive WEA notifications. You will automatically receive alerts if you have a WEA-capable phone and your wireless carrier participates in the program.

NPM is managed and sponsored by FEMA’s Ready Campaign. The Ready Campaign works closely with Citizen Corps and National Preparedness Community (NPC) members to increase emergency preparedness awareness and activities across the nation and to ensure the rollout of NPM events.

LEADERS OF COUNTY, CITY SUPPORT RE-FORMED MULTI-FEST

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – After some candid meetings with the new organizers of Multi-Fest, the top elected leaders in Kanawha County and the City of Charleston have expressed their support for the reformed organization as it prepares to continue Multi-fest this August.

County Commission President W. Kent Carper said the commission will discuss funding for the event at its next meeting on March 12 as Commissioner Henry C. "Hoppy" Shores has asked that the matter be placed on the agenda. Meanwhile Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said he will provide an update to City Council members tonight and request $15,000 to support this year's festival.

"The new board of directors for Multi-fest has promised to be more forthcoming with their financial information and more transparent in making sure money that is collected for the event is spent on the event," said Commissioner Carper. "The board has taken several steps to insure financial integrity of the organization and a reformed openness to the public and private sponsors that provide money to support it."

"For the past several years, our city budget has included a $12,500 line item for Multi-fest, but because of the uncertainty over the event in recent months, the budget we submitted to City Council last month does not include that funding," Mayor Jones explained. "I will be talking with City Council members about designating $15,000 so Multi-fest can continue uninterrupted this August."

Commissioner Carper has invited the newly constituted board to hold its meetings in the Old Courthouse Building if they need a place to meet. Mayor Jones said the city will also continue to provide police officers and EMTs during the event as well as assistance from other departments involved in setting up before and cleaning up after each of the three days at the capitol complex.

"I always enjoy taking my sons to Multi-fest, especially on Sunday afternoon, when it's a great reunion of old friends and people who have been involved in the fabric of our community for a long time," Mayor Jones said. "I am pleased that the next chapter of this event with new leadership will begin this year."

Commissioner Dave Hardy stated, "The Multi-fest board is moving in the right direction, and I believe the event can once again be successful."

Kanawha County Commission to Canvass the General Election
on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 7:00 a.m.

Charleston, WV – The Kanawha County Commission will meet as the Board of Canvassers on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 7:00 a.m. to begin the Canvass of the November 6th General Election. The Canvass will be conducted at the Kanawha County Voter’s Registration Office.

Commission President Kent Carper stated, “We will begin the canvass at 7:00 a.m. and will continue until the canvass is finished, however long it takes. We will stay until we are finished on Tuesday.” According to the County Clerk, Vera McCormick, there are approximately 1,100 provisional ballots to be reviewed during the Canvass. Commissioner Carper reviewed information from the 2008 Presidential General Election and noted that there were 1,300 provisional ballots that were reviewed during Canvass and it began at 7:00 a.m. and was completed at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Absentee Ballots that were received by Election Day, were counted and are included in the final cumulative totals from Election night results. Absentee ballots that are received at Voter’s Registration between Tuesday, November 6th through the morning of Canvass, will be counted at Canvass and included in the final cumulative totals at that time.

“The 35th House District Race is one race that will likely be closely watched during the Canvass of the General Election. The public elects 4 members to the 35th district and right now, before Canvass there is a 64 vote difference between the 4th and 5th candidates,” stated Commission President Kent Carper.

According to WV State Code, once the Canvass is completed, each county will declare the results. The Election cannot be certified until 48 hours following the final county completing its canvass and declaring its results. The Kanawha County Commission will announce the date of the certification of the election at a later time, once it is determined when all counties have completed canvass.

Kerosene Heater Safety Tips
Some tips to safely using your kerosene heater, include:
  • Kerosene heaters require 1-K grade kerosene. Never use a substitute, such as gasoline or camp stove fuel. In kerosene heaters, such fuels will start a fire or explode.
  • Check the wick every week during the heating season. If it's dirty, clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Never attempt to move a lighted kerosene heater. Extinguish the flame and allow the heater to cool before moving.
  • Never refuel a kerosene heater inside or when the heater is still hot. Wait for it to cool.
  • Kerosene heaters have a constant open flame and should not be used in a room where there are flammable solvents, aerosol sprays, lacquers, gasoline, kerosene containers or any type of oil.
  • Keep kerosene heaters at least three feet away from all furniture, curtains, papers, clothes, bedding, and other combustible materials.
  • Keep children and pets away from kerosene heaters. Touching any part of an operating heater above the open flame could result in a serious burn.
  • Always turn off your kerosene heater when unattended and at night.
  • Never smoke when refueling a kerosene heater.
  • Clean up any kerosene spills immediately. Spills are a fire hazard.
  • Never store kerosene in a container previously used to store other liquids. Be sure the container is suitable for kerosene storage and properly marked.
