Three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms
More than one-third (37 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present
The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms

**Remember**

Test the alarm monthly

Never disable a smoke alarm while cooking

If the alarm is a 9 volt battery operated device-change the battery at least once a year

Replace the entire smoke alarm every ten years

Put smoke alarms on every floor of your house

Place/Mount the alarms on the ceiling or high on the wall
(Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the best place for your alarm

Kanawha County Emergency Management is striving toward every residence having a working smoke alarm. If you are interested in having a smoke alarm INSTALLED in you residence or apartment, contact us. You may call us at 304.357.0966 if you lie in Kanawha County. If you live out of Kanawha County you may contact the WV State Fire Marshal’s Office. The smoke alarm will be INSTALLED by a qualified person. Take the steps necessary to help keep you and your family safe.
